In Reception they need to begin to learn number facts, counting in pairs/2s, and even start to think about number bonds to 10. In Year 1, they learn their 2s, doubling and halving facts, number bonds to 10 and 20, counting in 1s and 10s to 100, as well as forwards and backwards from any number. Year 2, they consolodate past learning, and being to count in 3s and 5s. By the end of year 2, children should be secure with their 2, 5, and 10 times tables and begin to count in 3s and use their 3x table within maths problems.
Year 3 and 4 are cruital years in terms of times table practise. At the end of year 4, children are tested on their times tables with a standardised national test. There is very little margin for error and children must achieve a high score to meet the standard. Children are tested on all times tables up to 12 x 12.
Beyond year 4, there are still many children who struggle to retain their number facts. This then makes methods such as long multiplication and division take much longer and areas of maths become more challenging that they need to be.
