Thursday Active Learning- Phonics/Reading/Spelling

For some children, learning phonics- reading and spelling can be challenge even up to secondary school. Phonics knowledge is essential to be able to decode the English langauge, but we also use a level of sight reading for high frequency and tricky words.

Try learning with us through songs, chants, active games, rhymes, raps and dance! Only £5 per hour, and a variety of sessions on each day over the summer holidays!

Keep up with both their pysical and congitive development over the summer holidays- availiable for all ages 6+, I hope to see lots of siblings and friends learning and growing in confidence together!

Join us upstairs in Studio 2, or meet us just before the session time outside Lighthouse Academy's room on the right downstairs in the gym.

In Reception they should be reading confidently with a yellow or blue book. In Year 1, they need to be secure with all their basic phonics- knowing the most common alternative sounds for reading and spelling. At the end of Year 1, there is a standardised national assessment called the Phonics Screening- children need to be secure with their phonics in order to meet expected standards. Year 2, they consolodate past learning with phonics, and begin to learn a wider range of alternative sounds for reading and spelling.

Year 3 and 4 are important for developing in confidence and learning new spelling rules and patterns.

Beyond year 4, there are still many children who struggle to retain their phonics and basic spelling rules. This is where a sight reading and spelling approach can become more beneficial
